Holder Care

Treated well,
held forever.

A Holdry Co. holder is built to last a lifetime — but only if you give it the attention it deserves. This guide covers everything you need to know.

Clean regularly

Every few uses — never let residue harden

Handle gently

No force, no abrasives, no harsh chemicals

Store properly

Cool, dry, away from sunlight and moisture

Replace filters

Every 6–8 uses for optimal draw and hygiene

Step One

Cleaning the inner tube

Tar and nicotine residue accumulate inside the bore after every use. Left unchecked, this buildup hardens, restricts airflow, and affects taste. The fix is simple — a pipe cleaner and two minutes.

For regular users, a light clean every few sessions and a thorough clean weekly keeps your holder performing exactly as intended.

01

Disassemble if possible

Separate the holder at any joints. This gives you full access to the bore from both ends.

02

Run a dry pipe cleaner through

Pass a clean pipe cleaner through the tube to remove loose debris. Repeat until it comes out clean.

03

For stubborn buildup, use isopropyl alcohol

Lightly dampen a pipe cleaner with isopropyl alcohol. It dissolves tar effectively without damaging most materials. Avoid this on meerschaum — use a dry cloth only.

04

Let it air dry completely

Before reassembling or using again, allow the holder to dry fully. Moisture trapped inside accelerates residue buildup.

By Material

Care by material type

Different materials require different approaches. Know what you're holding.

Brass & Polished Metal

  • Wipe with a soft microfiber cloth after each use
  • For tarnish, apply a small amount of metal polish in circular motions, then buff to a high luster
  • Wash with warm soapy water for general cleaning — dry immediately and thoroughly
  • Store in an anti-tarnish cloth or the included pouch to slow oxidation
  • Avoid abrasive scrubbers — they scratch the finish permanently

Ebony Wood

  • Wipe the exterior with a barely damp cloth — never soak or submerge
  • Periodically condition with a drop of food-grade mineral oil or wood wax on the exterior; buff off the excess
  • Clean the bore with dry pipe cleaners only, or very lightly dampened ones — excess moisture warps wood over time
  • Keep away from direct heat sources, which cause cracking
  • Store in its cotton pouch — wood breathes and benefits from protection

Resin & Bakelite

  • Clean with a mild soap and warm water solution using a soft cloth — no scrubbing
  • For polishing, Simichrome Polish on a soft cloth restores original shine without damaging the material
  • Never use alcohol-based cleaners — they cause irreversible surface damage to Bakelite
  • Keep away from extreme heat and direct sunlight, which cause fading and material degradation
  • Store away from solvents and harsh household chemicals

Meerschaum

  • Always allow to cool completely before handling or cleaning
  • Wipe the exterior with a soft, dry cotton cloth only — never expose to liquids
  • Clean the interior by gently twisting a dry cloth or soft tissue through the bore
  • Never use alcohol, water, or any liquid on meerschaum — it's highly porous and will absorb and discolour permanently
  • Avoid rapid temperature changes, oily hands, and direct sunlight
  • Store in its fitted case or a soft pouch — protection is paramount
Storage

Where it rests matters

Your holder spends more time stored than in hand. Protect it accordingly.

  • Store in the included cotton pouch or fitted case at all times when not in use
  • Ideal environment: cool (18–22°C), dry, away from direct sunlight and moisture
  • Avoid windowsills, car dashboards, and bathroom counters — temperature swings and humidity accelerate wear
  • If storing long-term, disassemble any removable parts first
  • For travel, use a hard-shell case to protect against impact
Filters

Replace, don't neglect

Filters trap tar and nicotine before they reach the bore. A fresh filter means a cleaner draw.

  • Replace disposable filters every 6–8 cigarettes — do not stretch further, degraded filters reduce airflow and hygiene
  • Reusable silica gel filters can be used 10–15 times; rinse thoroughly and dry completely before reuse
  • Standard filter diameter is 8 mm — check your holder's specification before ordering replacements
  • Insert filters with the heat-resistant cap facing the cigarette end
  • Rinse new filters under warm water before first use to remove any manufacturing residue
Do Not

What to avoid

×

Abrasive materials

Steel wool, rough sponges, or scouring pads scratch and dull any finish — use soft cloths only.

×

Harsh chemicals

Bleach, alkaline cleaners, and solvent-based products degrade materials. Mild soap and warm water is always the safe default.

×

Forcing pipe cleaners

Never force a pipe cleaner through a tight bore — this can crack joints or dent the interior. Use appropriately sized cleaners.

×

Extreme heat or cold

Rapid temperature changes cause cracking in wood and meerschaum. Never leave your holder in a hot car or on a cold windowsill.

×

Extended neglect

Hardened tar buildup is far harder to remove and can permanently affect taste and draw. Clean regularly — not eventually.

×

Alcohol on resin or Bakelite

Isopropyl and ethanol-based products permanently damage Bakelite and certain resins beyond recovery. Stick to soap and water.
